A recent video by Political Posting Mumma (PPM) used a twist on words to give the impression that schools in Victoria, Australia, used a program to teach students how to use dildos and to use razors as a sex toy.

The video also gave negative comments about the website called Scarleteen. Scarleteen is an award winning sexual health information website read about it here. Scarleteen gives excellent information to a world wide audience of young people about sexuality, this includes explaining the normal human function of masturbation.

Some important points about sexuality education for children:
  • Schools do not teach children how to have sex or how to use dildos or sex toys, it would be absurd to believe this claim
  • Children are receiving sexuality messages all of the time from our hyper sexualised society - they need an accurate, alternative version
  • Parents need to be the main sexuality educators of children
  • Schools teach sexuality education at an age appropriate level, backed by research and best practice
  • Teaching children about human sexuality does not mean giving them permission or encouragement. The opposite is true - adolescents delay sexual intercourse and have better outcomes such as less STI and less teen pregnancy, the more accurate and comprehensive information they have been given.
  • Children as young as 10 and 11 (and younger) ask about dildos, condoms and porn in most of my sex ed classes, because they have heard of it before
  • The average age of viewing pornography is 11 - this is the main sex educator in the absence of sexuality education from parents or school
  • Sexuality education does not have to be approached with fear and danger, a positive approach is far more beneficial to children
  • Sexuality education has many benefits - especially protection from abuse

3 facts about masturbation:
  • Using sex toys or dildos are a part of human history
  • Physical female humans have a clitoris - half the planet has this body part, it's only purpose it to provide pleasure
  • People can experience that pleasure if they choose to, this pleasure experience causes no harm

Scarleteen have an explanation that might help us understand the references to masturbation in the PPM video:
"...I don't mean to imply that masturbation is anything to be ashamed of. Quite the opposite. But some people do still view masturbation as wrong or harmful, and sometimes those people may be the ones you have to live with. Those views are often based in ignorance over how bodies work, or are spread by religious institutions that believe masturbation is sinful and thus want to discourage people from doing it." www.scarleteen.com
